Kansas

12th June 1989 - 15th June 1989

12th June.

From Denver I drove east along Highway 70 towards Kansas City, before reaching the city I turned north to Manhatten where I was to stay for the next 3 days.

On the drive I saw 2 American Kestrels, Western Meadowlark, a Red-tailed Hawk, 2 Swainson's Hawks, a Prairie Falcon, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Mourning Dove, 2 Turkey Vultures, a Northern Harrier and a Cooper's Hawk.

A few miles south of Manhatten is Konza Prairie, one of the few remaining areas of tall grass prairies left in North America.

I saw Eastern Meadowlark, Common Flicker, Red-headed Woodpecker, Baltimore Oriole, Eastern Bluebird, Great Blue Heron, Brown-headed Cowbird, Common Grackle, Northern Cardinal, White-tailed Deer, Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Wood Pewee, Common Nighthawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Upland Sandpiper, Blue Jay, Dickcissel, Bobwhite, Grasshopper Sparrow, Field Sparrow and Mourning Dove.
