On the 18th March:

1979

An early start to drive to Weymouth, the weather wasn't great with a thunder storm and soft hail, on the way we saw a Barn Owl. Later it cleared and the rest of the day was warm and sunny. At Radipole Lake we saw the usual ducks including 7 Ruddy Ducks, also 2 Chiffchaffs, 4 Cetti's Warblers, 3 Bearded Tits and a Stonechat.

At Ferrybridge we saw on the Fleet and on the harbour, 30+ Red-breasted Mergansers, 3 Wheatears, the usual waders including a Bar-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank, also 4 Velvet Scoter, a Slavonian Grebe, 17 Eider, a male Long-tailed Duck and a Merlin.

Then we went to Sandsfoot Castle overlooking the harbour where we saw 2 Firecrests, 4 Black-necked Grebes, 4 Red-necked Grebes and 2 more Slavonian Grebes.

Then on to Portland, where a seawatch from the bill produced 8 Fulmars, 5 Gannets, 12 Kittiwakes, 2 Guillemots, 5 Eider, 5 Common Scoter, 3 Purple Sandpipers and a long way out a diver and 2 large shearwaters.

1984

A trip to Dorset, firstly stopping at Draycott where there were 3 Brambling, a Chaffinch, a male Cirl Bunting and a Tree Sparrow. At Maiden Newton we saw a Dipper, 4 Yellowhammers and a Treecreeper.

Then we called in at Radipole Lake where we saw an adult Ring-billed Gull. Then on to Portland Bill where there was a Little Owl,

25 Purple Sandpipers, 2 Razorbills, 2 Oystercatchers, 2 Fulmars, 4 Shags, 2 Guillemots and 2 Firecrests.

On the way home we visited Radipole Lake again, this time seeing a 1st summer Ring-billed Gull, 2 Snipe, 3 Water Rails and 2 Cetti's Warblers.

1990

In Kenya at the Sobaki River, 3 new birds seen today.

2000

A return to the Peregrine watch point overlooking the Avon Gorge, seeing at least 10 Buzzards most of them mainly displaying over the woods towards Portbury, 2 Ravens, a female Goshawk, 2 female and a male Peregrine with very close views of a female carrying a pigeon and later, a female diving at a Raven. Also seen was a Kestrel and a Sparrowhawk.
