On the 8th December:

1974

In Central Wales, at Tregaron Bog where we saw 4 Red Kites and a male Hen Harrier, both new birds for us. Also seen were 12 Ravens, 2 Yellowhammers, a finch flock of c200 birds, mainly Chaffinches and Greenfinches with 9 Bramblings, 2 Golden Plovers and 3 Buzzards. On the way back, near Lampeter, there was a flock of 34 Ravens, some of them doing their tumbling display, also we saw a Tawny Owl.

1979

A trip to Cheddar Reservoir where the Long-tailed Duck and Garganey were still there, now the latest date for this species in our area. Then to Chew Valley Lake seeing the Greater Sand Plover again, also 2 Water Pipits, a Pink-footed Goose and 2 Brent Geese.

1993

In Australia on a sound recording trip, 8 new birds seen today.

2006

After strong southwest-westerly winds the previous evening, I went to New Passage where I saw a Guillemot, a local rarity, 3 Leach's Petrels, and, on the shore c1000 Dunlin, a few Turnstone and other waders, plus a Purple Sandpiper.
