On the 22nd May:

1976

A visit to Chew Valley Lake seeing a male Ruddy Duck, lots of Great Crested Grebes, 3 Little Grebes, 5 Common Terns, 5 Cuckoos,

4 Dunlin, a Hobby, good numbers of warblers and a Yellow Wagtail.

1977

Overnight on Portland, in the morning the sea was calm with only a few birds, likewise for landbirds, so we decided to go to the New Forest. At Beaulieu Road we saw an adult and 3 immature Woodlarks, 2 Honey Buzzards, a Buzzard, 2 Sparrowhawks, 2 Kestrels, 2 Curlew, 3 Stonechats and 3 Redpolls.

1981

In Ontario, 1 new bird and 2 new amphibians seen today.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

American Toad. 

1982

Leading a Wingspan Bird Tour to Point Pelee in southern Ontario.

1983

Overnight in the Brecklands, in the morning a visit to Weeting seeing 4 Wheatears, a Cuckoo and a Stone Curlew. Then the drive home.

1989

Leaving Little Downham, I went to the Welney Wildlife Centre again, seeing much the same as yesterday but now there were 2 Little Ringed Plovers, also several Turtle Doves, a Wood Sandpiper, a Whooper Swan, 2 Bewick's Swans and a Temminck's Stint.

On the way home I went to Welches Dam reserve on the Ouse Washes, where among other species I saw 3 male Garganey, 11 Ruff, several coming into breeding plumage and one with a chestnut ruff, also a Spoonbill.

1991

In the Russia Far East, 12 new birds seen today.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Red-crowned or Japanese Crane. 

1994

A visit to Catcott Lows with Bob Richardson to see a Temminck's Stint, we also saw a Little Stint, 5 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plovers, 3 Greenshank, a Redshank, a Bar-tailed and a Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Snipe and 2 Lapwings. There were a few duck on the water including a male Pintail and 2 male Garganey, around the lake were lots of warblers and from the hide we saw a Sykes's Wagtail.

Later, at Westhay we also saw lots of warblers, 2 Cuckoos and a male Marsh Harrier. Then a drive to Channel View Bay south of Clevedon, where there was a female Montagu's Harrier, also a late Wheatear.

1996

On a birding holiday to Turkey. no new birds seen today.

2006

The windy weather continued, at Severn Beach there were 15 Fulmars.
