On the 18th June:

1974

In the days before keeping records, on a visit to Chew Valley Lake, Laurel and I watched this pair of Great Crested Grebes at thier nest.

1977

A visit to Chew Valley Lake seeing 4 Black Terns, 10 comic terns, 1,000+ Swifts, 4 Turtle Doves, ducks and geese including 6 Ruddy Ducks.

Then to Stock Hill on the Mendips where there were c30 Redpolls, c20 Goldfinches, 3 Tree Pipits, Blackcaps, Whitethroats and a Garden Warbler.

1978

Overnight in Weymouth, with an early morning seawatch from the 'Bill', seeing a repeat of most of the common seabirds from yesterday, with an increase to 250+ Gannets, only 30+ Manx Shearwaters and 7 Common Scoters. As the sea went quiet we headed home and later took a walk through Leigh Woods, seeing 2 Wood Warblers and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker feeding at least one chick in it's nest hole.

1984

In California leading an Ibis Tours group, 4 new birds seen today.

1989

In La Perouse Bay, Manitoba on a sound recording trip for the BBC series 'Land of the Eagle'. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Willow Grouse. 

2000

A visit to Stock Hill on the Mendips seeing lots of Whitethroats, Willow Warblers and Linnets, a Garden Warbler, a Spotted Flycatcher, 

2 Siskins, 5 Tree Pipits and a Green Hairstreak. Later, at Shapwick there were lots of duck including c100 Gadwall, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Hobbys and c100 Lapwing. Another Hobby was seen at nearby Catcott Lows.
