On the 15th May:

1976

A trip to Brean Down where we saw 19 Whitethroats, 16 Willow Warblers, a Goldcrest, 4 Blackcaps, c35 Swallows, c45 House Martins, a Cuckoo, 8 Swifts, a pair of Reed Buntings, a Spotted Flycatcher, a Garden Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Wheatear, a Green Woodpecker, a Chiffchaff, 3 Rock Pipits, 2 Tree Sparrows and 2 Ravens.

On the way back we called in at Cheddar Reservoir seeing a Greenshank, 2 White Wagtails, a Barnacle Goose and 10+ Swifts. Later at Chew Valley Lake there were 800+ Swifts.

1977

On the way to Chew Valley Lake we stopped by the river west of Chew Magna, where there were 2 Dippers. At the lake there were 11 Black Terns, 5 Common Terns, an Arctic Tern, a Little Tern, 3 Little Gulls, a White Wagtail, a Common Sandpiper and 3 Grey Wagtails.

From there we went to several areas to the south and apart from lots of Swifts it was mainly quiet, but we did see a Cuckoo at Chilton Trinity and a Yellow Wagtail at Huntsworth.

1978

An evening visit to Leigh Woods seeing a Spotted Flycatcher, a Wood Warbler, a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, a Nuthatch, a Marsh Tit and hearing several Goldcrests.

1981

In Ontario, 3 new birds and a new mammal seen today.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Eastern Kingbird. 

1982

Leading a Wingspan Bird Tour to Point Pelee in southern Ontario.

1983

Overnight in Southwold, after meeting with the teams to find out where they went and what they saw, we headed for Minsmere where our highlights were 4 Nightingales seen and another 3 heard, 3 Garden Warblers, 60 Avocets, 4 Cuckoos, 2 Turtle Doves, a male Garganey, a Greenshank, an Osprey, 2 Marsh Harriers, a Cetti's Warbler and a hybrid Herring x Glaucous Gull.

Then we went to Staverton Forest seeing lots of woodland birds including 3 Cuckoos, 9 Hawfinches, 2 Firecrests, 6 Spotted Flycatchers, 3 Redstarts, a Redpoll, a Turtle Dove, 2 Marsh Tits and 2 Muntjac Deer.

Then to Folly House and Tangham Pool where there were 6 Turtle Doves, a Tree Sparrow, a Nightingale, several warblers, 4 Cuckoos, 8 Yellowhammers, 3 Woodlarks and 4 Tree Pipits. Later, we heard 2 Nightjars on Westleton Heath.

1985

In Tunisia, no new birds seen today.

1989

A drive with Dave Tombs to Wales, to the Berwyn Hills at Llandrillo near Bala to record 'lekking' Black Grouse. Arriving in the afternoon we had time to visit the lek area and put out some remote microphones, during which time we saw 4 Black Grouse.

1991

In the Russia Far East, 9 new birds seen today.

1996

On a birding holiday to Turkey. 1 new bird seen today.

1999

A visit to Chew Valley Lake where the only bird of note was a male Ring-necked Duck.

2004

A trip to Chew Valley Lake where the best birds were 3 male Garganey and a summer plumaged Ruff.

2016

A visit to New Passage seeing 300+ Dunlin, c80 Ringed Plovers, a Curlew Sandpiper and 4 Little Stints.
