
On the 15th December:
1974
A visit to Sand Bay, where a walk through the spartina grass at the top of the beach produced 30+ Snipe and a Jack Snipe, a new bird for us. On the tideline there were 60+ Curlew and 20+ Shelducks, we also saw c50 Skylarks, c20 Meadow Pipits, 6 Rock Pipits, 10 Reed Buntings, a pair of Stonechats and 3 Bullfinches.
From there we went to Tadham Moor where there were 8 Bewick's Swans, c200 Golden Plover, 20 Dunlin, 4 Redshank, a Ruff and a Barn Owl. We stopped at Chew Valley Lake on the way back seeing another 6 Bewick's Swans, 6 Goosander, 5 Goldeneye, a Bearded Tit which is scarce here, a Chiffchaff, a Merlin and out in the centre of the lake 4 Great Northern Divers, together, all swimming in a line.
