On the 4th May:

1975

Overnight on Portland, in the morning a sea watch seeing the usual seabirds including 6 Gannets and 2 Puffins, also seen at the bill was a Wheatear and a female Redstart.

Then we drove to Lodmoor were there was a Cuckoo, 7 Little Terns, a semi albino Grey Heron and a Cetti's Warbler, with 2 more heard. Our last stop was Radipole Lake where there were now 4 Little Terns and 4 Little Gulls, a Common Tern, the first summer Mediterranean Gull, 3 Bearded Tits and 40+ Swifts.

1976

An evening visit to Ashton Court where we saw a Wood Warbler.

1980

A return to Chew Valley Lake where there were 2 Common Sandpipers, a Dunlin, 3 Yellow Wagtails, 2 Black Terns and 2 Common Terns. We decided to go to Litton Reservoir where the best we saw was a Grey Wagtail, a Kingfisher, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, a Garden Warbler, a Nuthatch and a Yellow Wagtail. We returned to Chew, and while gone we had missed 1 possibly 2 Ospreys and the Marsh Harrier again! Staying at the lake we saw the pair of Goosanders, now 8 Black Terns and 42 Common Terns, a Stoat, 2 Garden Warblers, another Yellow Wagtail, a White Wagtail and a male Long-tailed Duck.

1981

A visit to Chew Valley Lake, at Herriott's Bridge there were c45 Swifts, an immature male Long-tailed Duck, 7 Goldeneyes, 3 Ruddy Ducks, a male Scaup and a few Swallows and martins. At Twycross 10 Willow Warblers, 8 Reed Warblers, 6 Garden Warblers, a Chiffchaff, 3 Lesser Whitethroats and 2 Tree Sparrows.

1983

An evening trip to Chew Valley Lake where we saw 2 Common Sandpipers, 3 Little Gulls, 26 Arctic Terns, a Common Tern and a Tawny Owl.

1984

Leading a Wingspan/Ibis Bird Tour to Spain.

1985

In Tunisia, no new birds seen today.

1987

A visit to Chew Valley Lake where, of note, were 2 Garganey, 3 Common Sandpipers, a Black-tailed Godwit, a Greenshank, a Weasel and, now that it has been split, a Yellow-legged Gull, a new British bird for me.

1988

In Maryland, at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on a sound recording trip, no new birds seen today.

1997

On a filming and sound recording trip to the Ukraine for a series called 'Living Europe'. A new mammal seen today.

2006

A visit to Severn Beach where I saw 49 Arctic Terns flying up river, also 2 Yellow and 2 White Wagtails, c30 Dunlin, 6 Ringed Plovers and 2 Whimbrel.

2012

In the garden in Portishead watching 6 Swifts, when a female Hen Harrier almost flew overhead, coming from the estuary and heading towards the Gordano Valley.

2013

A visit to Severn Beach seeing 1 dark and 2 pale phase Pomarine Skuas, a Whimbrel, 12 Dunlin and 4 Arctic Terns.

2016

A visit to Northwick Warth where there were lots of warblers including a Grasshopper Warbler, occasionally singing and showing, 16 Dunlin, 7 Ringed Plovers, a Whinchat, a Hobby, 2 Little Egrets, 4+ Buzzards, 4 Ravens and a Wheatear.
