On the 5th May:

1979

Our Norfolk weekend started at Horsey where we saw 3 Short-eared Owls, a Barn Owl, a Whitethroat, 6 Eiders, 2 Common Terns, a Whinchat, a Cuckoo and heard 3 Grasshopper Warblers, a Sedge Warbler and a Bittern, also watched several Snipe drumming.

1980

A visit to Frampton-on-Severn on a bright, sunny day, walking across the fields to the river we flushed a pipit which gave an unfamiliar call, on the ground we could see that it was a summer plumaged Red-throated Pipit, which we watched for sometime, a 1st record for Gloucestershire.

Also seen in that area were 10 Wheatears, 11 Turtle Doves, a Bar-tailed Godwit, 6 Redshank, a Cuckoo, 2 Whinchats, 7 Yellow Wagtails and a Hobby.

Then we went to the Sailing Lake where there were 5 Black Terns, 5 Arctic Terns and another 3 Yellow Wagtails. At Court Lake there were 25 Greylag Geese with 9 goslings, 2 Garden Warblers, 2 Cuckoos, lots of warblers, another

6 Turtle Doves and 2 Nightingales with another 3 heard.

We returned to the river, where it was around high tide, seeing 150+ Dunlin, 50+ Ringed Plovers, 6 Sanderling, a Common Sandpiper, 10 Whimbrel, 6 Bar-tailed Godwits and we found a male Kentish Plover

There were now 9 Yellow Wagtails, a Lapwing with 3 chicks and we saw the Red-throated Pipit again.

1984

Last day of leading a Wingspan/Ibis Bird Tour to Spain.

1985

In Tunisia, no new birds seen today.

1988

In Maryland, at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on a sound recording trip, a new reptile seen today.

1997

On a filming and sound recording trip to the Ukraine for a series called 'Living Europe'.

2005

A visit to Northwick Warth where there were 5 Whimbrel, lots of warblers including a Sedge Warbler, 3 Little Ringed Plovers, a buck Roe Deer only the 2nd record of one here, 30+ Oystercatchers, 40+ Shelducks, a Teal and a Wheatear.

Later, I went to Severn Beach for the evening high tide seeing c100 Kittiwakes and 24 Whimbrel.

2012

In the garden in Portishead where there were 6 Buzzards overhead, 4 together, 2 Hobbys and a Sparrowhawk, also a Swift, 22 Swallows and 2 House Martins moving north.

2013

A visit to Aust Warth where there was a Grasshopper Warbler, singing but not seen, also a Whitethroat.
